- Congenital Diaphragmatic hernia ( CDH )

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a birth defect that occurs when the diaphragm, the muscle separating the chest and abdomen, doesn’t fully form or has a hole. This allows abdominal organs like the stomach and intestines to move into the chest cavity, crowding the developing lungs.

Incomplete Diaphragm: CDH happens when the diaphragm, the muscular barrier between the chest and abdomen, has a defect

Lungs Underdeveloped: Due to pressure from abdominal organs in the chest, the baby's lungs may not develop properly, leading to breathing difficulties.

Prenatal Diagnosis Possible: CDH can sometimes be detected during prenatal ultrasounds, allowing for early intervention.

Surgery is Usually Required: Repairing the diaphragm and allowing the organs to return to their proper positions is typically done through surgery.

FAQS for Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia
Yes, unfortunately, CDH often causes breathing difficulties. Because abdominal organs push into the chest cavity, there’s less space for the lungs to develop properly. This can make it hard for your baby to breathe after birth.
Prenatal ultrasounds can sometimes detect CDH, allowing doctors to plan for your baby’s care even before birth. Early diagnosis is crucial for a better outcome.
Surgeons typically perform minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery whenever possible. This procedure repairs the hole in the diaphragm and allows the abdominal organs to return to their proper position in the abdomen.
Following surgery, your baby will receive specialized care in the NICU. This may involve respiratory support like a ventilator to assist breathing and promote lung development.
With successful surgery and ongoing care, most babies with CDH recover well and experience no lasting complications. However, regular check-ups with a paediatrician are important to monitor their respiratory health and development.
