Meconium Aspiration Syndrome

Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) occurs when a new-born baby breathes in meconium, the first stool they pass in the womb, during delivery. This can block airways and cause breathing difficulties

Clearing the Airway: Meconium is gently suctioned from the baby's airway shortly after birth.

Supporting Breathing: Additional oxygen or mechanical ventilation may be needed to help the baby breathe effectively.

Medication: Medications like bronchodilators can ease breathing by relaxing the airways.

Personalized Care: Treatment plans are tailored to each baby's specific needs.

FAQS for Meconium Aspiration Syndrome

Meconium Aspiration Syndrome occurs when a new-born inhales meconium, the baby’s first faces, mixed with amniotic fluid during or before birth, leading to respiratory distress.
Diagnosis is typically based on clinical symptoms, a physical examination, and imaging studies such as chest X-rays. Presence of meconium in the airways may also confirm the diagnosis.
While it cannot always be prevented, close monitoring during labour and prompt intervention if signs of fatal distress are detected can help reduce the risk of MAS.
Complications may include respiratory failure, pneumonia, persistent pulmonary hypertension, and long-term respiratory issues. Early diagnosis and treatment can help minimize these risks.
